Central Oregon Takes a Major Step Toward AVA Recognition

We are proud to share an exciting milestone for our region’s wine community. The Central Oregon Winegrowers Association has officially submitted an application to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) seeking recognition of Central Oregon as a federally designated American Viticultural Area (AVA).

This submission represents years of collaboration, research, and hands-on experience from growers and winemakers who believe deeply in the uniqueness of Central Oregon as a wine-growing region.

For more than 16 years, vineyards across Central Oregon have proven that our high-desert climate, volcanic soils, elevation, and dramatic temperature swings create conditions unlike anywhere else in the country. These factors have allowed both traditional Vitis vinifera grapes and cold-hardy hybrid varieties to thrive, producing wines that continue to earn recognition and build a loyal following.

To support the AVA petition, we worked closely with geologist Dr. Kevin R. Pogue of VinTerra Consulting. His research documents the distinct geology, climate, and physical boundaries that clearly differentiate Central Oregon from surrounding regions. This scientific foundation is a key component of the federal review process and reinforces what local growers have long known to be true.

Establishing a Central Oregon AVA would allow wines produced here to carry a recognized regional identity, helping consumers better understand where their wine comes from and what makes it special. AVA designation also supports long-term sustainability for vineyards by strengthening grape value, encouraging investment, and opening the door for future winery development and agritourism.

This effort has received strong support from regional and statewide partners, including Visit Central Oregon, Oregon State University researchers, and leaders within Oregon’s wine industry. Together, we see this as an important step in elevating Central Oregon’s role in the broader wine landscape while supporting rural economies throughout the region.

The federal review process is expected to take up to 24 months. During that time, we will continue growing, collaborating, and sharing the story of Central Oregon wine.
